This page explains what information Rugged Compass, LLC ("Rugged Compass," "we," "us") collects through RuggedCompass.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have. We've kept it in plain language.
What you send us. When you use our contact form, we receive your first and last name and email address. If you choose to include them, we also receive your organization, phone number, website, and any message you write. To send the form, you tick a box agreeing that we may store your information and contact you about your inquiry. The box links to this policy and is required, so the form can't be sent without it.
What's collected as you browse. Like most websites, we receive basic technical information such as your browser, device, approximate location based on your IP address, the pages you visit, and how you arrived at our site. This is collected through cookies and similar tools described below.
Before you choose, and if you decline, our Google tag and Metricool stay off and no tracking cookies are set. Two things still happen on every visit. Our hosting provider, Webflow, receives your IP address and basic request information whenever your browser loads a page, as any web host does. And HubSpot's scripts, which run the cookie banner and the contact form, load and send HubSpot a basic page view without setting cookies: the page address and title, your browser language and screen size, and your IP address. We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information through this site.
If you're in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or a similar region, the law asks us to rely on a legal basis for using your information. Ours are:
Replying to your inquiry and keeping a record of our conversations: our legitimate interest in answering you and running our business. The checkbox on the form records that you agree we may store your information and contact you about your inquiry.
Understanding how people find and use our site: your consent, given through the cookie banner.
Measuring our advertising: your consent, given through the cookie banner.
Keeping the site secure and blocking spam, including reCAPTCHA on the contact form: our legitimate interest.
Sending you updates and stories: your consent, given through the optional checkbox on our contact form.
We use HubSpot to run our contact form and to connect visits to our site with the people who contact us. HubSpot's tracking cookies, our Google tag, and Metricool stay off until you choose Accept on our cookie banner. If you choose Decline, or your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat that as a decline: they stay off, and a single cookie remembers your choice.
Our site also uses a Google tag to measure how our Google ads perform and to show our ads again to people who visited our site, and Metricool to measure site visits. Both load only after you accept. When you accept, the Google tag sends Google your IP address, the page you're viewing and where you came from, your browser and device details, and, if you arrived from a Google ad, the ad-click identifier. Google may link your visit to our site with your activity on other sites and on Google services where you're signed in to Google, to measure and show our ads. Metricool receives visit details such as the pages you view, where you came from, and your browser and device. The contact form also uses Google reCAPTCHA, which helps keep spam out and may collect device and browsing signals when the form appears or when you send it. It runs with the form whether you accept or decline, because the form needs it to stay secure, and declining does not stop you from using the form. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link in the footer of any page. You can also manage Google's ad personalization at adssettings.google.com.
Your cookie choice (HubSpot banner): remembers whether you accepted or declined. Up to six months.
HubSpot tracking (hubspotutk, __hstc, __hssc, __hssrc): connects visits to your contact record if you submit the form and shows us how the site is used. Lasts from 30 minutes up to 6 months.
Google tag (_gcl_au, _gcl_aw): helps us measure how our Google ads perform. Up to 90 days.
Metricool: counts and describes visits to our site. Its cookie lifetimes are set by Metricool; see its privacy policy for details.
Google reCAPTCHA: protects the contact form from spam and runs with the form whether you accept or decline. Governed by Google's privacy policy and terms.
If you tick the optional box on our contact form to receive updates, we'll send you occasional emails about our work and stories from the humanitarian organizations we serve. Your consent is the basis for this. Every email includes an unsubscribe link and our mailing address, and you can also ask us to stop by using the contact form or writing to the mailing address below.
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers that help us run the site and our business: HubSpot (contact management and forms), Webflow (website hosting), Google (advertising measurement and reCAPTCHA spam protection), and Metricool (analytics). They may use your information only to provide their services to us.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep your information depends on what it is:
Contact and inquiry information: we keep it for as long as it's useful for our relationship with you, and we delete it if you ask.
Email subscribers: we keep your email address until you unsubscribe.
Your cookie choice: up to six months, then the banner asks again.
Analytics and advertising data: kept by Google and Metricool for the periods set by their own policies and by the settings in our accounts with them. Our Google tag cookies last up to 90 days (see above).
Which rights you have depends on where you live. We'll consider a request from anywhere, and we'll tell you if the law gives you less than you asked for. Each right below is marked with who it applies to:
Everyone: see the information we hold about you.
Everyone: correct it, or delete it.
Everyone: withdraw your consent at any time. This doesn't affect what we did before you withdrew.
EEA and UK: restrict or object to how we use it.
EEA and UK: receive a copy in a portable format.
California and other US states: opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. We don't sell it.
California and other US states: not be treated differently for using any of these rights.
To use any of these rights, send us a message through the contact form in the Contact us section below, or write to us at the mailing address there, and start your message with "Privacy request." We may need to confirm it's you, and we'll respond within one month (45 days for California residents, extendable where the law allows). You can also use an authorized agent. If we decline a request, we'll explain why, and you can reply to ask us to reconsider. If you're in the EEA or the UK and aren't satisfied with our response, you can complain to your local data protection authority.
California residents: if you accept advertising cookies, Google's tag may count as "sharing" personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising under California law. You can decline on the cookie banner, and we treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a decline.
Our service providers operate largely in the United States, so information you send us may be processed and stored there. For visitors in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, these transfers rely on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and its UK Extension where the provider is certified, and on Standard Contractual Clauses otherwise.
Our site is meant for adults and organizations. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.
If we change this policy, we will post the updated version here and update the date at the top.
